DIY garden kits, eco-friendly tools and materials hot trends at Lowe’s Canada this spring

Lowe's spring event

Lowe’s Canada has a lot of great items for the outdoor living space coming this spring.

On the same day Lowe’s Canada announced they were purchasing competitor Rona for a cool $3.2B, the company held a media event in downtown Toronto to showcase its collection of outdoor goodies for this spring and summer.

Along with a range of gas and wood-burning fire pits and big and colourful umbrellas, the home improvement company has put a lot of focus into DIY garden kits and eco-friendly tools and materials this year.

Getting greener

For the environmentally conscious homeowner in need of a new deck, Lowe’s Canada is now stocking TimberTech composite lumber.

Made from 51 per cent recycled content, TimberTech is easy to install and comes in a variety of styles and colours. TimberTech lumber is resistant to fading and rotting and even comes with a 25-year fade and stain warranty (it also looks very nice).

Lowe’s Canada is also now stocking Aura deck tiles, which are made of resin and won’t crack, split, warp or fade. They’re easy to install and come with a 20-year warranty.

If you don’t like the noise or fumes gas-powered machines cause (or the maintenance they require), you’ll be happy to learn that Lowe’s-owned tool brand Kobalt has beefed up its battery-operated outdoor power equipment line in a big way.

Joining its 40-volt and 60-volt lawnmowers, leaf blowers and trimmers is a much more powerful 80-volt line, which also includes a chainsaw. I’m very interested to see how these compare to the 56v EGO Power+ line I currently use.

More gardening options

With the price of produce on the rise ($8 for a cauliflower!), Lowe’s Canada has many DIY garden options available this spring, including awesome grow bags and a 6’x8′ snap and go greenhouse that easily assembles (and would look great in my backyard).

Grow bag

These grow bags are an easy way to have fresh veggies all summer long.

One of the more unique items on display was the $249 wooden Veg Trug, which is a raised table-like grow box that comes with a pre-formed liner and gives lots of space for growing herbs and leaf vegetables.

Ready-made themed edible bowl mixes, such as the pizza mix bowl which includes basil, oregano, thyme, tomatoes and yellow peppers, are also a hot item this spring and summer. These will be available for $24.99 and should keep you stocked with fresh herbs and veggies all season long.

Lowe’s has everyone covered

No question about it, the biggest draw at the spring event was for the ready-to-assemble “she shed”.

Marketed as the “man cave” for women, it has a swing-out window, drink ledge on the outside and enough space inside to house a small fridge and couch. While it would be an excellent space for entertaining, I can see it being better used as a summer office.

If you’re looking for new outdoor furniture, there’s a reclining couch with built-in cooler, stylish sectional (photo at very top) and an amazing teardrop daybed available.

I would have many great naps in this daybed.

BBQs have also gone through a huge transformation since last summer. Whether you want a compact infrared model, a charcoal-gas hybrid or a $3,499 wood-burning pizza oven, Lowe’s Canada has you covered.

More photos from the Lowe’s Canada spring/summer collection below. Most items will be available at Lowe’s stores across the country and online at lowes.ca in early March.
