I fondly remember my entire family venturing out to the drive-in theatre every weekend when I was a kid. I got to see Superman and E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark and Empire Strikes Back, plus a few movies I probably shouldn’t have seen (Friday the 13th is really scary when you’re five).
There was something so special about getting cozy in the backseat of the family car and eating gobs of junk as a movie played on a big outdoor screen. The experience stayed with me my entire life and as I got older I continued to go to drive-in movies with friends (some of whom had never been to a drive-in theatre). I now take my own kids to the drive-in so they can experience the fun of it all (although they prefer sitting on the roof instead of inside the car for some reason).
Since I love the drive-in so much, and since the Victoria Day long weekend is upon us (and most of the existing drive-in theatres across the country are now open for the season), I’ve gone on a mission to map out all the drive-ins I could find in Canada.
To view the full list and map of drive-in movie theatres in Canada, visit bamcat.com/canadian-drive-in-map. If you know of a drive-in theatre I missed or find one I included that has since closed, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I’ll update the map and list.
