True Grit: Review

Jeff Bridges in True Grit.

True Grit (Blu-ray)  – I wasn’t overly blown away the first two times I saw the Coen Bros.’ adaptation of Charles Portis’ western novel True Grit, and didn’t see what all the fuss was about. Third time’s a charm, I guess, as watching it again recently on Blu-ray I finally connected with it and found myself loving every moment of it.

The story follows young Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) as she tries to hire a bounty hunter to find the man who killed her daddy. She finds Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges), someone she is told has “true grit”, and soon they are on the hunt together. LaBoeuf (Matt Damon), another bounty hunter, decides to tag along with them to round out the crew. Although Bridges and Damon have done better in previous films, Steinfeld is amazing and really owns the part. For an unknown actress to steal a movie from Bridges and Damon is a feat in itself.

True Grit looks and sounds great on Blu-ray and is definitely one for the collection. The image is crystal clear, and the 5.1 DTS-HD sound mix is perfect, especially during the few gun fights. Special features include an interview with Steinfeld, making-of featurettes, a 30-minute piece on author Charles Portis, and more. A regular DVD and digital copy of the film are included as well. Film *** Blu-ray *** (3.5 out of 5 stars).
